ほとんど目で見ることのできないこのエアロゲル、自重の900倍近い量の油を吸収することができる99.9パーセントが空白の物質です。ゲルによって吸収された油は直接絞りだすか、燃焼させて処理することができます。これまでの除去方法である吸着マットにこのエアロゲルを上手く組み合わせれば、その作業効率は改善し、より多くの水生生物を守ることができるようになるかもしれません。
もちろん事故そのものを未然に防ぐことが一番大切ですが、被害を最小限に抑える最後の防衛線としてその活用が期待されます。
